The NOI Group's Explain Pain course is an evidence-based professional development program designed to revolutionize how healthcare providers understand, talk about, and treat acute and chronic pain. Based on decades of neuroscience research by co-founders Prof. Lorimer Moseley and A/Prof. David Butler, the course shifts the treatment paradigm from a purely structural "tissue damage" model to a biopsychosocial, brain-centered understanding of pain.

The curriculum teaches clinicians how to use pain science education as an active therapeutic tool to reduce patient fear, lower central nervous system sensitivity, and promote functional recovery.

Primary Learning Objectives

By completing the course, clinicians are expected to:

  • Navigate complex patient conversations with confidence, reducing patient catastrophization and negative beliefs.
  • Identify underlying pain mechanisms rather than relying strictly on outdated structural diagnoses.
  • Deconstruct the mind-body connection seamlessly without making patients feel like their pain is "all in their head".
  • Implement immediate, actionable frameworks to build long-term patient self-efficacy and agency.

The program is highly interdisciplinary. It is designed for any licensed healthcare professional managing persistent or complex pain presentations, including:

  • Physiotherapists and Physical Therapists
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Chiropractors and Osteopaths
  • Medical Doctors and Nurses
  • Psychologists and Mental Health Counselors
  • Exercise Physiologists
